two thoughts

1) I’m pretty sure the sequence of Homewrecker, The Broken Vow, Bitter And Then Some, and Heaven In Her Arms on Converge’s Jane Doe is one of the best sequences of songs on an album evar. The album starts off awesome, then is all liek “oh bitch you ain’t seen nothing yet.”

2) What’s with all these mathcore/metalcore bands integrating southern rock in their music? There’s obviously Every Time I Die and Maylene and the Sons of Disaster, but I was listening to Ire Works by The Dillinger Escape Plan and I noticed it on a couple songs. I think the Cancer Bats does it some too. It’s weird, but it works well.

I Touched Keith Buckley - a concert review, among other things

Last night I saw Every Time I Die, Trap Them, Howl, and Faith City Fiasco (local band). They played in a really small, cozy venue, so everything was up close and personal. I got in and saw the local band act, which wasn’t all that bad. My Neurosis shirt got compliments - a guy liked it so much he offered to put anything I got at the bar on his tab. I didn’t get anything, but it shows that Neurosis is well worshiped anywhere you go. This is relevant for later.

Howl was fucking legit. I really need to get their stuff. Very good headbanging doom/sludge with constant badass riffs. By the way, it’s yet another sludge act with a woman in it - guitarist Andrea Black.

Trap Them was also pretty good. I was a bit surprised they weren’t as well received - seemed like everyone was there for ETID. I soon found out that they were.

I stood near the front for this one again, so when ETID went on stage, shit went ballistic. The crush of bodies, the stage divers…it was a hell of a time. Now, if you read my last review, I broke my glasses at my last show. The deal is, I got them “fixed,” meaning that I got the lenses back in and the frame straightened a bit, but since the lenses were scratched all to hell, I needed to get new glasses. But I decided that these scratched up lens glasses would be my show glasses. So I wore them to this show. Sure enough, second song, a stage diver jumps over me and knocks my lens out again. I found it on the ground after the show.

The performance itself was amazing. But now I know that I probably won’t try to stay up at the front for these things again, because I had to take a breather for a song or two in the back because all the crush of bodies, me trying to sing the lyrics at the top of my lungs, and some of the moshing I did was making it hard to breathe with how fast my heart was racing. On the moshing point: I told some people I was talking to that if they played Ebolarama, I would exit the front and run into the mosh. Sure enough, they played it, and I did, but the pit just had a bunch of hardcore dancers, so I ended up just running back and forth into the dancers. Disappointing.

Oh, and as the title said, I touched Keith Buckley a couple times when he was standing right over me. Hawt.

After the show, I went back to the merch stand and had a nice convo with Jordan. I talked about my glasses (this is another good conversation starter!), and he said that when he was a kid he broke tons of pairs of glasses at shows. I told them that I broke them at a previous show with High on Fire, Kylesa, and Torche. He said that it sounded like a good show. He asked me my name and shook my hand. Class act.

I stood in front of the merch stand debating what to buy. Andy was also standing to the side of the booth, talking and signing posters. I decided to get a white New Junk Aesthetic poster, and I asked him to sign my poster. He did, and then he told me that he liked my shirt, saying “Best band fucking ever” (or something like that). We talked about how they are touring again and that they’re making a new album. He recommended I check out a band called Disappearer because they have some Neurosis influences. I have, and they sound pretty good. After that, I bought a shirt, and left.

Every Time I Die, Trap Them, and Howl

TONITE.

I know I promised vids and such from the Fest show, and those will come, but I also will take footage of this event too. Keith Buckley is about to go all fucking-awesome on my face tonight.

Very informative interview that further exemplifies just how awesome Keith Buckley is. He’s really on a level above so many musicians and frontmen just on how he views the world and music.

Take note and keep an eye out for The Damned Things.
